You haven’t eaten carbs in over a month… you climb the Empire State Building on the Stairmaster every day… you’ve tried every diet pill imaginable… but you just can’t get rid of that stubborn “erf”. The Exercise Resistant Fat that sticks to your hips like frosting on a Cinnabon! The saddle bags that you carry every day even though you don’t own a horse. The pudge that just won’t budge.
If you’ve truly got a case of the erf, you’re going to need a new strategy to get rid of it. Not to say that you’re wasting your time at the gym, because the gym is good for plenty of other reasons, but you need to know that the erf will win the battle against exercise every time.
All hope is not lost though… Here’s what you need to beat him.
Liposuction is one of the most popular procedures performed today, and is still the uncontested champion over all kinds of fatty foes. For smaller erf’s, the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia in an hour or two, and when a talented (and qualified) plastic surgeon is doing the suctioning, it will be totally gone by the time you leave the office. Larger erf’s might require a trip to the operating room for the greatest level of comfort, but you’re still guaranteed to wake up with a result that would have beenimpossible to get in the gym.
Laser liposuction (SmartLipo, CoolLipo, SlimLipo, etc) is a newer, widely-publicized, version of the gold-standard technique of traditional liposuction. Some believe that the newer technique may lead to less bruising and soreness, and possibly to better long-term results, but it’s not entirely clear whether these benefits are real, or just good marketing on the part of the companies who sell the equipment.
Long-story short, it probably doesn’t matter which technique you choose; you’ll likely get great results with either one. The jury is still out on whether the laser makes a difference, but you can always count on the fact that liposuction will take the “rrrrrr” out of the erf.
There are several technologies that don’t involve a trip to a plastic surgeon, but also don’t do away the erf either. Thermage, Velashape, and Ulthera are a few of the brand name fat fighters that you can get at any high-quality spa. There are no incisions, no cannulas, no bruising, and no discomfort with these techniques, but there is also no guarantee that you’ll notice any difference.
Don’t despair over what the Stairmaster can’t fix. If you’ve got a base case of the erf on your tummy, arms, or thighs, let liposuction be your guide. Eat right, exercise, and know when you need to suck it up, and suck it out!
